Abstract
This paper samples 14 open coastal cities in China to study quantitatively the competitiveness of urban tourism development from five aspects, such as the overall economic competitiveness, the level of tourism development, the status of infrastructure, the ecological environment, and science, education, and culture and health. It applies factor analysis to calculate the score of each index with the mean squared deviation. The results show that: Shanghai and Guangzhou enjoy the strongest competitiveness for tourism development and in the future they will continue to maintain the dominant position;closely followed are Tianjin,Ningbo,Qingdao and Dalian which play a leading and pulling role on the surrounding regional tourism development. It is found that Ningbo makes great progress in tourism development and enjoys a bright future while the remaining eight cities are the least competitive.
