Abstract

The material dealt with in this report was collected from birds in Bai-Yaag-Dien Lake in March, April, October, November and December, 1964. Through the examination of 464 birds, belonging to 47 species, 160 (34.26%) individuals were found to be infected by cestodes. Belatively higher percentages of infection were found in Podiceps ruficollis poygei (89.3%), Anas poecilorhynchus zonorhyncha (66.6%). Anas falcata (51.3%) and Anser fabalis (50.0%). Totally 26 species of cestodes, belonging to 5 families and 20 genera were found. Among them, one is considered as new to science and 13 are recorded for the first time from China. In addition, 8 species of birds are found to be new hosts of the cestodes. Wardoides anasae sp. nov. (Figs. 2-4)Host: Anas falcata Goergi, 1775.Location: Caecum.Locality: Bai-Yang-Dien Lake, Hopeh Province, China.Holotype and paratypes deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Aeademia Sinica, Peking, China.Diagnosis: Worm of medium size. Proglottids broader than long. Strobila 45-49 mm in length and 2-3.6 mm in maximum breadth. Neck absent. Immature proglottids 0.009 mm × 0.103-0.135 mm; mature, 0.186-0.467 mm × 0.849-1.26 mm; gravid, 0.55-0.56 mm. × 1.886-2.3 mm. Longitudinal excretory ducts 2-paired. In mature proglottids, the ventral excretory duct 0.032 mm in diameter and the dorsal one 0.014 mm Genital pores unilateral, with the opening at anterior third of the lateral margin of the proglottid.Scolex rounded, 0.140-0.155 mm in breadth. Suckers 4 and unarmed, 0.060-0.065 mm × 0.042-0.060 mm. Rostellum short, 0.079-0.083 mm × 0.033-0.046 mm, bearing a single row of 26 booklets, each of which measures 0.0104 mm in length.Teste 3, roundish or elliptical, 0.215-0.24 mm × 0.158-0.205 mm, arranged in a transverse row, one at antiporal side and two at poral. sometimes the antiporal one situated slightly anterior to the other two. External seminal vesicle 0.083-0.14 mm in diameter and 0.149-0.177 mm in length and the internal seminal vesicle 0.065-0.079 mm in diameter, 0.149-0.242 mm in length. Cirrus pouch spindle-shaped, slightly sinuous, 0.242-0.280 mm in length and 0.074-0.112 mm in diameter, with the bottom of the pouch not reaching the median line of the proglottid. Cirrus short and slender, projecting into genital sinus at top of a papilla covered by exceedingly small spines.Ovary situated ventrally and posteriorly to the testes, consisting of numerous pear-shaped follicles of different sizes and almost three-lobed, when viewed externally, the antiporal lobe being slightly larger than the other two and extending to or beyond the excretory ducts on the same side. Vitelline gland compact, lobed and posterior to the ovary. Receptaculum seminis oval-shaped, ventral to the posterior part of the cirrus pouch 0.112-0.234 mm in length and 0.084-0.112 mm in breadth. Uterus sac-like, slightly lobed along the outline, occupying almost the whole space of the gravid proglottid. Oncosphere olive-shaped, 0.028-0.036 mm × 0.009-0.120 mm.Comparison: The new species may be readily distinguished from the known species W. nyrocae and W. oidemiae by the number of rostellar hooklets and the length of the cirrus pouch. In W. nyrocae, the rostellar hooklets are 16 in number, while in W. oidemiae they are 22 in number. The cirrus pouch of the former two species is very long, with its bottom reaching possibly the anterior border of the antiporal testis; while in the new species W. anasae the rostellar hooklets are 26 in number and the cirrus pouch is less than half as long as that of the former, with its bottom not reaching the median line of the proglottid. For comparison of other characteristics see Tab. 3 in the Chinese text.
