Abstract

ObjectiveTo investigate the influence of selenium and fl uoride on DNA damage and apoptosis in human hepatocytes in vitro.MethodsThe DNA damage rate, cellular apoptosis, and cell c ycle in human hepatocytes were measured after hepatocytes were incubated with fl uoride and/or selenium for 12 hours in vitro. ResultsThe DNA damage rate, apoptosis, and cell number in S phase in hepatocytes in the fluoride group were significantly higher than the co ntrol group and the fluoride-exposed and selenium-treated groups (P0.05).Th e DNA damage rate and apoptosis in hepatocytes in the selenium group were higher than control group, but there was no significant difference between selenium gr oup and control group (P0.05). ConclusionSome dose of selenium can antagonize DNA damag e and apoptosis in hepatocytes induced by fluoride.
