Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of atorvastatin on blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Methods Eighty-four inpatients or follow-up out patient with essential hypertension treated with regular antihypertensive drugs were assigned into two groups:control group(35 cases)and atorvastatin group(49 cases). Both control and atorvastatin groups took regular antihypertensive drugs, but the latter took additional atorvastain from 10mg to 40 mg,mean(14.4±6.4)mg/d,depending on blood lipid levels.Brachial blood pressure and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring(ABPM)were measured before and six months or one year after treatment. Results No change of all measurements in control group was found after treatment. In atorvastatin group, brachial SBP,brachial PP and 24h mean SBP,24h mean PP of ABPM decreased significantly(P0.05).Six months and one year after treatment, there was no difference in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. Conclusion Atorvastatin can reduce SBP and pulse pressure in the patients of hypertension.
