Abstract
This paper has reviewed the historical evolution of the patterns of farmer-workers of China; discussed great contributions that farmer-workers had done to the course of modernization of China since the reform and opening-up; analyzed the characteristics of the flows of rural surplus labor force at present, and some outstanding problems facing the farmer-workers as disadvantaged groups; pointed out that the developmental tendency of the farmer-workers of China; and clarified main factors that influence farmers becoming citizens, which are industrialization, urbanization, agriculture moderniza - tion, system innovation, rural-urban development divide, and the gap between the workers and peasants.
