Abstract

Rotary ultrasonic machining is a hybrid machining process combining the material removal mechanisms of conventional ultrasonic machining and diamond grinding, which has been shown to be a promising,cost-effective machining method for hard, brittle materials. This paper describes recent developments in rotary ultrasonic machining, the main performance parameters of typical rotary ultrasonic systems and recent developments on modeling of the machining mechanisms and material removal. The main applications of rotary ultrasonic machining, including drilling, milling and grinding, are stressed.Future development trends in rotary ultrasonic machining, including machine tools, theoretical models, diamond tool fabrication and experimental research are also described.
