Abstract
Objective To evaluate the use of nitrate test and bacterial staining microscopy in the diagnosis of urinary tract infection(UTI).Methods Mid-stream urine underwent bacterial quantitative culture and urine routine tests by nitrite determination and staining microscopy.Results The nitrite test showed its sensitivity for UTI was 62.8%,specificity 96.3%,positive predictive value 75.9% and negative predictive value 93.3%.It was shown in staining microscopy that the sensitivity for UTI was 85.7%,specificity 94.1%,positive predictive value 73.2% and negative predictive value 97.3%.For combination of the two means the sensitivity for UTI was 57.1%,specificity 99.7%,positive predictive value 97.6% and negative predictive value 92.6%.Conclusion The combination of the two means could be used for rapid diagnosis of UTI.
