Abstract

Objective To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of partial splenic arterial embolization for hypersplenism caused by portal hypertension.Methods 17 cases with hypersplenism were treated by partial splenic arterial embolization. The catheters were inserted into the splenic artery selectively through the femoral artery useing Seldinger technique. The platelets (PLT)and/or white blood cells (WBC) and/or red blood cells (RBC) were obviously under normal level before operation.Results The PLT and WBC increased obviously in 1~2 weeks after operation and returned to normal or exceed it and reached the top, while 2~3 months later they increased obviously than that before operation(p0.05).But the changes of RBC were not obviously(p0.05).The complications included left upper abdominal pain and fever (17 cases).Conclusion Partial splenic arterial embolization is safe and effective in relieving hypersplenism and portal hypertension.
