Expression and its significance of cyclooxygenase 2 in laryngeal carcinoma

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To investigate the expres- sion and its clinical significance of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) in laryngeal carcinoma. METHODS The im- munohistochemistry method was used to determine the expression of COX-2 protein in specimen of 29 cases with laryngeal carcinoma and 15 cases with vocal cord polyps. RESULTS Positive staining rate of COX-2 in specimen of laryngeal carcinoma ( 72.4 % ) was signifi- cantly higher than that of vocal cord polyps (0.0 %) (P 0.001). CONCLUSION Overexpression of COX-2 may play a crucial role in the carcinogenesis and pro- gression of laryngeal carcinoma.
