Abstract

Objective: To study the use of determination of serum sialic acid in diagnoses and curative effect observation of oral and maxillofacial tumors. Methods: The contents of SA of 151 samples including 60 normal persons, 53 benign and 38 malignant oral-facial tumors were determined. Results:The contents of serum SA of the patients with malignant tumors were significantly higher than that of normal persons and the patients with benign tumors (q =18.75~21.04,P0.01). The contents of serum SA of the patients with malignant tumors were significantly decreased when the therapy (including operation and chemotherapy) was effective(t =9.80~35.35, P0.01), but were still higher than that of normal persons(t =7.20, P0.01). On the contrary, the contents of serum SA remained high or even higher when the malignant tumors recurred or metastasized. Conclusion: Determination of serum SA was valuable in diagnoses and curative effect observation of oral and maxillofacial tumors.
