Relationship of p53 and VEGF Expression with Tumor Angiogenesis in Gastric Carcinoma

Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship of p53 and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) with tumor angiogenesis in gastric carcinoma.Methods Expression of p53,VEGF and MVD (microvessel density) were examined immunohistochemically in 76 gastric carcinoma specimens,correlation among the expression of p53,VEGF and MVD and various clinicopathologic factors were also analysed.Results The expression rate of p53 and VEGF in gastric carcinoma were 42.1% and 38.2% respectively,the mean value of MVD was 36.6±17.2(±s).Statistics analysis revealed that overexpression of p53,VEGF and MVD were correlated positively with the pathologic factors such as invasive depth,lymph node involvement and metastasis to liver.Furthermore,the over expression of p53 was correlated positively with VEGF.Conclusions p53 may contribute to tumor angiogenesis by means of up-regulation of VEGF.The overexpression of p53,VEGF and MVD in gastric carcinoma were correlated positively with severity of invasive depth,lymph node involvement and metastasis to distal organs,thus may serve as the poor indicators of prognosis in gastric carcinoma.
