Abstract
AIM To illustrate the role and significance of P16 protein in the occurrence and development of colorectal carcinoma. METHODS The expression of P16 protein was studied immunohistochemically in 56 patients with colorectal carcinoma and 15 cases of normal colon tissue. RESULTS The positive rate of P16 protein in colorectal carcinoma (33 85%) was significantly lower than that in normal tissue (73 3%, P 0 01 ). The loss of P16 protein expression was associated with differentiation of carcinoma and Duke's grade ( P 0 05) . CONCLUSION P16 protein takes a key role in occurrence and development of colorectal carcinoma and is an indicator of malignancy and development of tumor.
