Abstract
In order to compare the sensitivity of vaginal mucosa of two kinds of animals to irritation by different test substances, rat and rabbit vaginal mucosa irritation tests were used to observe the irritation reaction and pathological changes caused by mucosa disinfectants and sanitary products. Results: The rates of positive reaction in the tests for irritating effects of mucosa disinfectants on rabbit and rat vaginal mucosa were 56.3% and 15.8% respectively. The irritation reaction intensity of rat vaginal mucosa to mucosa disinfectants was no irritation, while the vagina disinfectants causing very mild irritation of rabbit vaginal mucosa accounted for 37.5%.The irritating intensity grades of the disposable sanitary products to either rabbit or rat vaginal mucosa were no irritation. The rate of pathological changes detected in the animal vaginal mucosa exposed to 40 kinds of products was 97.5%.The main pathological changes were submucosal edema, congestion and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Conclusions: The rate of irritation reaction of rat vaginal mucosa exposed to mucosa disinfectant was significantly lower than that of rabbit vaginal mucosa.Pathological examination at cell level is relatively sensitive for evaluating the degree of vaginal mucosa damage caused by test substance and facilitates grading of irritating intensity of the test substance.
