Peripheral nerve conduction velocity analysis of 75 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Objective To investigate whether peripheral nerve conduction velocity (NCV)determination can be used as an index for the early diagnose and treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN). Methods By using Viking IV electromyogram and evoked potential system, we measured motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV)and sensory nerve conduction velocity(SCV) of three hundred nerves from 75 cases of diabetes mellitus type 2. Results Total abnormity rate of NCV was 54.3%,in which the abnormity rate of SCV(63.3%) was higher than that of MCV(45.3%).A significant difference was observed between the abnormity rate of MCV and that of SCV .The changes of NCV were correlated with course of disease,but not with age, upper limbs and lower limbs. Conclusion NCV is an important nonage objective index for diagnosing the peripheral neuropathy of diabetes mellitus,which can be used as one of conventional inspection items of diabetes mellitus clinically
