Abstract

Objective: To investigate the time of sublethal cerebral ischemia and the protective effects Methods: The bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries and the morphological changes of the neurons in gerbil hippocampal tissue slices were observed by light microscopy Results: The pretreatment with 1 minute bilateral carotid artery occlusion produced no protective effect while 2 minutes occlusion followed by 3 5 minutes occlusion resulted in the most complete destruction at 30 min、6 h、15 d, and the protection of CA1 neurons at 1 d、3 d、5 d、7 d intervals Conclusion: The pretreatment with brief ischemia leads to complex responses of the brain to secondary ischemic insult and protective effects at intervals of 1~7 days
