Abstract
Aim:To investigate time of sublethal cerebral ischemia and time of protective effects of CA 1 neurons. Methods:Bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries and the morphological changes of the neurons in gerbil hippocampal tissue slices were observed by light microscopy. Results:Pretreatment with 1 min bilateral carotid artery occlusion did not produce protective effects. 2 min pretreatment followed by 3.5 min occlusion resulted in the complete destruction and protection of CA 1 neurons at 6h,15d and 1d,3d,5d,7d interval respectively. Conclusion:Pretreatment with brief ischemia leads to complex responses of the brain to secondary ischemic insult and protective effects at intervals of 1~7 d
