Clinic application of serum total bile acid determination in neonate jaundice

Abstract
Objective To determine the significance of serum total bile acid (TBA) in the diagnosis and treatment of neonate jaundice. Methods Serum TBA and other liver function items were determined in 72 pathologic jaundice patients (including 38 high direct bilirubin serum) and 95 physiologic jaundice patients. Results The TBA value was 0-19μmol/L in physiologic jaundice serum and it was 73.74±69.30 μmol/L. There was significant difference between two groups (P0.01). In high direct bilirubin group, it was 116.56±67.86μmol/L and there was a significant difference compared with the value in control group. The TBA value was correlated to those of ALP, DBIL, γ-GT. Conclusion Serum TBA level has high specificity and susceptiveness in the laboratory diagnosis of neonate jaundice.
