On the Inspiration of Metonymy and Metaphor in ESL Vocabulary Cognition and Teaching——Based on the Analysis of Meaning Items of"Face"as a Polysemy

Metonymy and Metaphor are two major types of word meaning extension.Metonymical thinking is based on contiguity and metaphorical thinking is based on similarity.Through the brief introduction of Metonymy and Metaphor,and the analysis of typical polysemyfaceof its meaning items in dictionary and sentences,this paper devotes to showing the great influence of Metonymy and Metaphor in ESL vocabulary cognition and thus in ESL teaching.
