Abstract

Objective The study was conducted to investigate the fatal injuries and death causes among residents in Xiuzhou District for the development of preventive measures. Methods The surveillance data on death among residents in Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing from 2003 to 2005 were collected for descriptive epidemiological analysis on the conditions of death and death causes. Results The mortality rate of injury was 61.60/lakh to 70.45/lakh, and the average annual mortality rate was 64.91/lakh, which accounted for 8.74% of the total deaths being the 4th death cause. Injury was ranked the second in accordance with the potential years of life lost (PYLL), as the total PYLL being 11010.5 per year and AYPLL 18.29 person years per person. Injury was the main cause of death in the 1-44 aged groups, accounting for 47.60% of all deaths(ranging from 35. 83% to 95%). The top five death causes of fatal injury among the residents were traffic accidents by motor vehicles, drowning, suicide, accidental drop, and traffic accidents due not to motor vehicles, accounting for 86.05% of all injury deaths. Conclusion Fatal injury was the major cause of death among the residents in Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing. Systematic interference should be performed to control and prevent the injury.
