Abstract

This paper tries to explore factors leading to the market reform in Northern Song Dynasty and the development features of Dongjing’s commercial space under the impact of the reform by analyzing the city image in the drawing of Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival as well as other related documents. It is believed that the fast population growth, promotion of the position of commerce, and rising of citizen status are the main factors contributing to the market reform in the Northern Song Dynasty. The development of Dongjing’s commercial space shows the following characteristics: firstly, the commercial space develops in a linear form; secondly, a commercial network system gradually forms connected points and plates; thirdly, the commercial space is extended to outer city and country market becomes prosperous; finally, the operation time is further extended.
