Abstract
The Vernacular Movement in the late Qing Dynasty, occurring along with political reforms and ideological campaigns,is the pioneer and precursor of the May 4th Literary Movement. Thanks to its emphasis on the publicity and popularization effects of literature in terms of language instrumentality, the Vernacular Movement in the late Qing Dynasty has, linguistically speaking, initiated reforms in linguistic style to the neglect of the ontology of language as a systematic existence of social culture. In a word, although the Vernacular Movement has not essentially transcended the linguistic system of archaic Chinese,it has virtually shakeo the camp of traditional literature and led to the transition and transformation from traditional literature to modern literature.
