Abstract

The development of the cognitive metaphor theory helps to find the theoretical basis for the existence of metaphor in scientific discourse. Furthermore, the grammatical metaphor theory represented by Halliday who founds the systemic functional school opens up a whole new realm for the analysis of scientific discourse. Lexical metaphor and grammatical metaphor applied in scientific discourse play their unique roles to keep this kind of language variety perfect, that is, to combine the colorful content and concise objective form together.
