Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of modified Baizhu Decoction(MBD)on deficiency constipation. Methods Eighty-six patients with deficiency constipation were randomized into treatment group(N=58)and control group(N=28),which were given MBD and phenolphthalein tablets respectively for 4 weeks. The effect-starting time, therapeutic effect after suspension for 2 weeks, and interval of defecation were observed. Results (1)One day after administration, different degrees of defecation occurred in 30(51.72%)patients of the treatment group and in 16(57.14%)of the control group, the difference being insignificant(P0.05).(2)After suspension for 2 weeks, the total effective rate was 89.65% in the treatment group and 46.43% in the control group, the difference being significant between the two groups(P0.01).(3)The interval of defecation was shortened in the two groups after treatment(P0.01 compared with that before treatment),and the shortening of defecation interval was obvious in the treatment group(P0.01 compared with that in the control group). Conclusion The short-term effect of modified Baizhu Decoction on deficiency constipation is similar to that of phenolphthalein tablets, but the long-term effect is better.
