ON HUIZHOU MERCHANTS AND CLASSICAL LEARNING ACADEMIES OF JIANGSU AND ZHEJIANG IN MING AND QING DYNASTIES

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Huizhou merchants led the salt business in Zhejiang through such ways as the cooperation with fellow countrymen, the combination of Confucianism and commercialism and the association with officials. The salt merchants managed their business in other places, and in order to solve the education of children, they often set up family schools and academies in the locals. Chongwen Academy, Ziyang Academy, Zhengxue Academy and Xishan Ziyang Academy,which were all established by Huizhou merchants, had made a great contribution to the education of Zhejiang
