Low doses of mifepristone for emergency contraception

Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy,side effects and acceptability of mifepristone 10 mg and 25 mg for emergency contraception.Methods 198 cases of healthy women were recruited and allocated randomly in 2 groups.Group Ⅰ(n=98) mifepristone 10 mg was given;group Ⅱ(n=100) 20 mg.Follow-up visit was performed on the 7th day of the next expected period of menstruation in order to evaluate the contraceptive efficacy,side effects of mifepristone and the changes of menstruation.Results Contraceptive rates were 89.28% and 89.04% in group Ⅰ and Ⅱ.There was no statistical difference between the two groups(P0.05).The side effects were mild with incidence less than 10% in each group.The rates of delayed onset of next menstruation were 8.16% and 12% in group Ⅰ and Ⅱ respectively(P0.05).Conclusion Mifepristone 10 mg is better than mifepristone 25 mg for emergency contraception.
