Abstract
Objective To study the serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in patients with gastric cancer and to elucidate their clinical significance. Methods Serum VEGF level was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and serum NO level detected by spectrophotometry in 65 gastric cancer patients, 50 chronic gastritis patients and 40 healthy individuals. Relationship between serum level of VEGF and NO and the clinicopathology of gastric cancer were discussed. Results The serum VEGF and NO levels in gastric cancer patients were significantly higher than those in patients with chronic gastritis and those of normal persons (P0.01). Serum VEGF and No level correlated positively with tumor invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and TNM stage. Conclusion Level of serum VEGF and NO were elevated and related to the aggravation and lymph node metastasis in patients with gastric cancer.
