Abstract
Objective To study indoor air pollution by formaldehyde and the dynamic change of formaldehyde concentration in newly decorated apartments. Methods 66 newly decorated apartments were selected and the concentration of formaldehyde was determined for 7 times in 6 consecutive months and the materials for decoration were investigated at the same time. Results 81.48% of the wood-based board and 94.63% of the solvent, paints used in the decoration could release formaldehyde. The concentration of formaldehyde in the indoor air reached the peak at the fourth determination, the average concentration was 0.272 mg/m3, higher than the national standard limit (0.1 mg/m3) and then decreased apparently with the prolongation of the time after the decoration. About 30% of apartments, formaldehyde concentration were still higher than the national standard limit half a year after decoration. Conclusion The decorative materials (wood -based board) which may release formaldehyde are over used and as a result, indoor air formaldehyde pollution is serious in newly decorated apartments in Wuhan.
