Abstract

Village developed greatly in the Tang Dynasty. The government attached great importance on village administration. A village head (Cunzheng) was appointed to in charge of the village, bearing responsibilities of agricultural production, household registration, tax and labor collection, public security and other village affairs. So it is safe to say that village was recognized as an administrative unit legally in the Tang Dynasty marked by the assignment of village head (Cunzheng).
