A Philosophical Review on Cooperative Principle

Grice's Cooperative Principle has evoked great disputes amomg the circle of pragmatics.Most of the disputes focuses on its four Maxims.This paper gives a philosophical review on Cooperative Principle and its four Maxims,judging the criteria of the four Maxims from the perspective of verbal communication and rhetoric for the purpose of better understanding of the theoretical and practical value of Cooperative Principle.We claim that the Cooperative Principle can not be replaced by other pragmatic principles for its great covery and explanatory power.
