Abstract

Ancient Greek culture of tragedies has such a profound and everlasting effect on Eugene O'Neill that he has written tragedies except one all his life.So to speak,ancient Greek tragedies are the prime source of his creation.His tragedies inherit ancient Greek cultural tradition,becoming an organic constituent of the Western culture of tragedies.Not only does he carry forward ancient Greek culture of tragedies in its subject matter,pattern,motif,and tragic spirits,he also expounds the meanings of mod- em society and human beings,based on his personal life,unique observation,insight of subsistence,and his understanding and enlightenment of life,supplying an explanatory basis for the real subsistence of Man to bring to light the true meaning of life,purify the souls of the people,and bestow life with a lofty meaning.
