Abstract
Based on the analysis of cognitive metonymy in English and Chinese polysemy,this article finds that the most basic way of the word extension is metonymical thinking.Metonymical thinking and metaphorical thinking are like two points on a continuum.Some of cognition is the same for English and Chinese polysemy.
