Cognitive Universals and Polysemy

Abstract
The language phenomenon of polysemy is a type of cognition.With cognitive theory as the framework,this article analyses its underlying cognitive mechanism,and based on which,we have a comparative study between polysemous equivalents in Chinese and English,and the study shows that the similarity and difference can be accounted for in terms of similar cognition and cross-cultural differences.
