Combined treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine for acute appendicitis:a report of 230 cases

Objective To observe the therapeutic effects of acute appendicitis treated by combined traditional Chinese and Western medicine in grass-roots or community hospitals. Methods A total of 230 patients were examined and diagnosed as acute appendicitis, and were not fit for operation at that time because of varied reasons. Antibiotics were administered intravenously (iv,gtt) for 7 days; at the same time, Chinese medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion were performed on these patients. Results Abdominal pain in cured or improved patients alleviated in the first day of treatment, and were fundamentally remitted in 1-4 days. 197 patients were confirmed normal by ultrasound examination after treatment. The cure rate averaged 85.65%(81.12%-90.18%), and effective rate was 88.69%.The result achieved by this method was better than that by traditional Chinese medicine or Western medicine only (u=3.295, P≈0.000). Conclusion Combined traditional Chinese and Western medicine is a promising and effective regime in treating acute appendicitis.
