Analysis of cuffed central venous catheter undergoing hemodialysis

Objective To review the complications of cuffed central venous catheter with its management.Methods A retrospetive study was performed in 25 cuffed central venous catheter procedures during the last five years,which include 8 right internal jugular catheterizations,2 left internal jugular catheterizations,12 right subclavian catheterizations,3 left subclavian catheterizations.Results The major complications include catheter malposition 4 of 25; infection 8 of 25 (32% ) (1 .3 episodes per 1000 catheter- days) ,2 (25% ) of the 8 cases were salvaged successfully; catheter thrombosis 6 of 25 (24% ),3(75% ) of the 4 cases in intraluminal thrombus were salvaged successfully.The cuffed central venous catheter was kept for 2 to 27 months,median 8 months.Conclusion Hemodialysis with cuffed central venous catheter in some patients who have exhausted all other access is essential and its complications can be controlled.
