Abstract

The prose of the old generation is an eye-catching scene in the modern Chinese prose arena in that a host of senor prose writers, who have been active in the last two decades of the 20th century, have turned out a series of excellent prose in their declining years, thus having added much luster to the 20th-century prose arena. Their prose, demonstrative of the historical philosophy unique to scholars and writers and of their solid academic qualities well versed in both Chinese and western learning, has laid a foundation for the return of modern cultural and ontological prose. In face of frustrations in life, those prose writers are sensible and unrestrained, behaving dignifiedly, which has become an example for their followers in terms of both cultural personality framework and artistic essence. Their prose is an important textural resource for Chinese prose to be known in the world.
