Abstract
Aim:To investigate the infection rate and typing of human papillomaviruses(HPVs) in breast benign and malignant lesions. Methods:A total of 73 fresh breast carcinoma tissue and 84 fresh breast benign lesions were collected and subjected to detect and type HPVs by PCR assay. Results:In 73 breast carcinoma tissue, the positive rate of HPV16 was 76.7%(56/73),that of high risk-HPVs(HPV16 and 59) was 76.7%(56/73),including 20 cases with HPV16 infection alone,6 cases with HPV16 and 59 mixed infection,28 cases with HPV16 and 6/11 mixed infection, and 2 cases with multiple infection(HPV16 with HPV59 and HPV6/11).In 84 breast benign lesions, the positive rate of HPV16 was 48.8%(41/84),that of high risk-HPVs was 51.2%(43/84),including 15 cases with HPV16 infection alone,2 cases with HPV59 infection alone,2 cases with HPV6/11 infection alone,24 cases with HPV16 and 6/11 mixed infection,2 cases with multiple infections(HPV16 with HPV59 and HPV6/11).HPV18,31,33,52,and 58 were not found in all breast benign and malignant lesions. There was significant difference in the positive rates of HPV16 and HR-HPVs between breast benign and malignant lesions(χ2 was 12.879,10.921,respectively,P0.01).The positive rate of HPV16 in invasive ductal carcinoma tissue was 80.6%(43/50),higher than 56.6%(13/23) in invasive lobular carcinoma tissue(χ2=7.663,P0.01).Conclusion:HPV16 may play an important role in the carcinogenesis of breast carcinoma, and the mixed infection of HPV16 with HPV59 or HPV6/11 should be emphasized in breast carcinoma.
