Abstract
Objective To study the clinical application of edaravone,a free radical scavenger,in the brain edema after acute intracerebral hemorrhage. Methods 97 cases diagnosed as acute cerebral hemorrhage were randomly assigned into edaravone group and the routine therapy group. 30 healthy individuals were also included in this study. 52 patients in edaravone group were given injection of edaravone besides of routine treatment for 14 days. The other 45 patients were treated routinely without edaravone. Results Before treatment, the levels of NO and LPO were significantly higher(P0.05)while SOD and GSH-Px were significantly lower(P0.05) in edaravone and routine treatment group than those in the control group. However,no significant difference was observed between edaravone group and the routine treatment group(P0.05). On 3th and 7th day,the levels of No and LPO in the edaravone group were significantly lower while SOD and GSH-Px were significantly higher in edaravone group than those in the routine therapy group. Until the 14th day,the significant differences were no longer observed between the two groups(P0.05). There was no significant difference(P0.05) between edaravone group and the routine therapy group in the edema volume before treatment. However, the edema volume in the edaravone group decreased significantly than the routine therapy group on the 3th and 7th day(P0.05). Conclusion Edaravone can effectively remove the generous free radicals and reduce the brain edema after intracerebral hemorrhage.
