Abstract

A novel design method of ac-coupled burst mode optical receiver (BMOR) is investigated for optical burst switching (OBS).The receiver has a simplest configuration of a PIN-TIA preamplifier,an ac-coupling capacitor, and a limiting amplifier. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results prove it to be a feasible method to reduce power penalty caused by the ac-coupling capacitor.Under the data rate of 1.25Gb/s,the BMOR can restore the burst within 300ns with high sensitivity. The design method breaks the limitation of ac-coupled BMOR in high speed applications.
