Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the effect of Lamotrigine combining with valproic acid on sex hormones and sexual function in male epilepsy patients. Methods: 53 female epilepsy cases were selected presenting in our hospital from June 2010 to October 2012 and were randomly divided into 2 groups: 26 cases of valproic acid group and 27 cases of lamotrigine group. 15 cases of untreated female epilepsy cases and 25 cases of healthy female volunteers were collected in the control group. Results: Comparing with the control group,TT,FSH and LH level in valproic acid and lamotrigine combining with valproic acid group had no significantly difference( P 0. 05). TT and LH levels were lower( P 0. 05),while FSH level was higher( P 0. 05) in the untreated epilepsy group. Comparing with the untreated group,TT and LH level were higher( P 0. 05) and FSH level was lower( P 0. 05)in lamotrigine combining with valproate group. Comparing with the control group, sexuality scores in valproic acid group and lamotrigine combining with valproic acid group had no significant difference( P 0. 05),while in the untreated epilepsy group, the scores were lower( P 0. 05). Comparing with the untreated epilepsy group, lamotrigine combining with valproic acid group scored higher( P 0. 05). Comparing with the valproic acid group, lamotrigine combining with valproate group had better effect in the treatment of epilepsy. Conclusions: Lamotrigine combining with valproic acid can improve sex hormones and sexual function in short- term treatment. Both ADEs and epilepsy itself can affect the sex hormones in epilepsy patients. As a result, the impact of long- term treatment and clinical significance of lamotrigine combining with valproic acid requires further investigation.
