Abstract
AbstrcatObjectiveTo determine the safety and effect of peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) for parenteral nutrition(PN). MethodsThe clinical data of 50 consecutive patients who receiving PN via PICC were compared with 50 patients who receiving PN via central venous catheter(CVC).ResultsThe average catheter insertion days were 17.56d in group PICC,and 18.24d in group CVC(P0.05).PN completed rate was 92.0% in group PICC,and 96.0% in group CVC (P0.05).The incidence of complications was 18.0% in group PICC,and 14.0% in group CVC(P0.05).The complications of PICC included phlebitis,catheter occulusion,infection,malposition of catheter,but no pneumothorax or hemopneumothorax occured .Group PICC had higher phlebitis than that in group CVC(P0.05).Conclusions PICC may be a safe and effective alternation to patients receiving PN.
