Abstract

Objective To investigate the current epidemic status of clonorchiasis in Guangdong Province. Methods The investigation sites were selected by stratified sampling according to the geographic factors of river systems and historic epidemic data. Modified Kato-Katz's thick smear was used to detect the parasite eggs in the feces. The data of infection rate and intensity were analyzed. Results A total of 13 876 persons of 27 sites in 9 counties were investigated. The average infection rate of Clonorchis sinensis was 16.42% and the mean EPG was 359. The infected persons were found in 8 counties (cities),and 3 counties were found to be heavy endemic area of clonorchiasis,in which the infection rates were over 20%. The infection rate in the male was 18.92%,1.36 times of that in the female with the infection rate of 13.89%. The clonorchiasis was found in every age group, but the adults were relatively more serious. The infection of C. sinensis in fishers and businessmen was more serious than that in other occupations. Conclusion The C. sinensis infection has become a serious public health problem in Guangdong. Comprehensive control measurements should be carried out.
