Abstract
Objective To investigate the recent situation of Clonorchis sinensis infection in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Methods The investigating sites were selected by stratified sampling considering the geographic factor of river systems and historic data. Modified Kato-Katz's thick smear was used for detection of the parasite eggs in the feces; the data of infection rate and intensity were analyzed. Results A total of 13 990 persons from 27 villages in 9 Counties (Cities) were checked. The average prevalence of C. sinensis infection in the residents was 9.76% and the mean EPG (eggs per gram of faces) was 1 083. The infected cases were found in 6 Counties (Cities), and 3 Counties were found to be heavy endemic area of clonorchiasis, in which the prevalence were over 20%.The prevalence in the male was 13.09%, 2.22 times of that in the female (5.89%); the mean EPG in the male was 1 320, 2.01 times of that in the female (658).The infection was found in every age group, but the adults were contracted more seriously. The prevalence in Hanzu was 11.56%, higher than that of Zhuangzu (8.17%). But the mean EPG in Zhuangzu was 1 470, greater than that of Hanzu (902). The infections in doctors, teachers, peasants and carders were more serious than that in other occupations. Conclusion Since the first national parasites survey in 1987-1989, the prevalence of C. sinensis infection in Guangxi has risen 6.02 times. The quick rising and spreading of the parasite infection has become a serious public health problem in the local areas. An integrated control measurement should be carried out.
