Abstract
Objective:To detect the prevalence of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) of risperidone in the treatment of first episodic schizophrenia. Method:Forty six schizophrenic patients, who were first episodic and never administered neuroleptic agents, were assessed with EPS by the extrapyramidal symptom rating scale (ESRS) and evaluated with clinical symptoms by the positive and negative symptom scale (PANSS) before and after treatment. Results:Six patients (13 0%) with significant EPS before treatment didn't recur of EPS;13 patients (28 3%) had dyskinesia or Parkinsonism with risperidone 4~6mg/d,with the reduction of risperidone dosage, these symptoms were lessened or disappeared;other patients with risperidone≤3mg/d had no EPS. Conclusion:The results may play an important role in the early and long term treatment of schizophrenia.
