Abstract

Objective To investigate the value of vascular ultrasound in the diagnosis of carotid artery disease in elderly hypertensive patients. Methods A retrospective study was conducted in 115 elderly hypertensive patients with carotid artery disease in our hospital from January 2010 to December 2012.Their manifestations of sonography were analyzed. Results In 115 cases there were 104 with carotid artery intima-media thickening.Plaque was detected in 73 cases,of which 9 with carotid artery stenosis.Plaque was easily formed in the carotid bifurcation and internal carotid artery. The intima-media thickness(IMT) of 115 cases in the control group was normal, and plaque was detected in 11 cases. There were significant differences in IMT and plaque detection rate between the two groups(P0.05).Conclusion Hypertension is closely related to carotid atherosclerotic lesions.Vascular ultrasound can directly display the carotid atherosclerotic lesions, and is of great value in early detection and screening of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in patients at high risk.
