Effect of losartan potassium on the metabolism of blood uric acid in essential hypertension patients complicated with hyperuricemia

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of losartan potassium in essential hypertension patients complicated with hyperuricemia.Methods Sixty-six essential hypertension patients complicated with hyperuricemia were administered losartan 50 mg/d as an initial dose,and the dose was adjusted according to the level of blood pressure and uric acid.The blood pressure and blood uric acid level were measured one day before and 6 and 12 weeks after the treatment,and adverse effects were observed.Results Both systolic and diastolic blood pressures significantly decreased after the treatment.The serum uric acid level was decreased to various degrees after 6-week treatment and recovered to normal range after 12-week treatment.No side reactions were found during the whole treatment.Conclusion Losartan can control blood pressure and decrease uric acid level effectively and safely,thus being contributive to reduce gout attacks.
