An Analysis of Xu Yun's Fu:the Correlations between Xu and the Genre of Chinese Fu

Volume Three of Xu Yun's The Humble Manuscript of Xingsuo the Korean literatus contains nine Fu's,which were permeated with illusions and dreams,devoted to vivid travels and scenery descriptions,intoxicated with sad recalling of antiquity and eulogy of friendship,giving full and direct expression to his indignation at being banished and frustrated in officialdom. Xu also gave a passionate portrayal of his own experiences,reflecting his unique understanding of the social realities,exposing abundant realistic significance. Furthermore,the Fu's were instilled with a distinct colour of devotion to sentiment expression and moral instruction. The internal cause lies in that Xu drew his inspiration from traditional poetic theories of China in forming his characteristic ideas of sentiment expression and moral instruction. The external cause is that Xu was influenced by the restoration trend of the Seven Stars to ancient styles in Ming Dynasty around. Finally,Xu is given to deriving nourishment from the Chinese literati to form his own style,towering above his fellows.
