Pragmatic Meanings by the Violation of the Cooperative Principle

In order to carry out the conversation smoothly,it is necessary for the interlocutors to abide by some common principles,which are generalized by the linguist Herbert Paul Grice as the cooperative principle of discourse.But in reality,it is impossible for the participants to stick to the cooperative principle strictly.Therefore,the hearer must derive between the lines the implicatures intended by the speaker.This paper analyzes the pragmatic meanings produced by the violation of the cooperative principle from the maxims of quantity,quality,relation and manners.
