Association of Serum Resistin with Metabolic Syndrome in Elderly Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Objective To investigate the association of serum resistin(IR) with metabolic syndrome(MS) in elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) patients.Methods A total of 82 cases of elderly T2DM patientswere classified into MS group(n=46) and non-MS group(n=36).Another 30 healthy cases were selected as the control group.Body mass index(BMI) and waist/hip ratio(WHR) were calculated.Fasting serum resistin,insulin,glucose,HbA1c,UA,full lipid profile,and hs-CRP were determined.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 13.0 software.Results Serum resistin and HOMA-IR levels in MS group and non-MS group were significantly higher than those in the control group(both P0.01).Significantly higher concentrations of resistin and hs-CRP,and HOMA-IR were observed in MS group than in non-MS goup(P0.05).Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that HOMA-IR and WHR highly influenced the level of serum resistin.Conclusion Elderly T2DM patients with MS tend to have high fasting serum resistin.The resistin level is positively correlated with HOMA-IR and WHR.Resistin may play an important role in insulin resistance,obesity,and diabetes mellitus.
