Suture anchors combined with tension band wiring for inferior polar fracture of the patella

Objective To observe the result of treatment of inferior polar fracture of the patella with suture anchors and tension band wiring.Methods Thirty-four patients with inferior polar fracture of the patella were treated with suture anchors and tension band wiring in our hospital between March 2008 and September 2009.The fracture and patellar tendon were fixed and repaired with suture anchors.A stainless steel wire was passed through a transverse hole drilled in the proximal part of the patella and tibial tubercle and tightened as a tension band wiring.Results All the patients were followed up for 12-25 months(average,17 months) and all the fractures were healed.Two patients had shown superficial incisional infection and healed through intravenous antibiotic therapy and dressing change.According to the LU Yu-pu's score of knee function,27 patients were excellent,6 patients were good,1 patient was fair.The excellent and good rate was 97.1%.Conclusion Suture anchors combined with tension band wiring for inferior polar fracture of the patella can obtain excellent clinical result with few complications.
