Effect of moxibustion at Guanyuan(CV-4) on exhaustive time, lactic acid and SOD in skeletal muscle of rats

Abstract
Objective: To observe the effect of moxibustion at Guanyuan(CV-4) on exercise tolerance and its relation with free radical metabolism. Methods: Randomly divided rats into normal control group, exhausted control group, moxibustion group and swimming training group. After 20 days of intervention, rats in moxibustion group, swimming training group and exhausted control group received exhaustive swimming tests. Exhaustive time of each swimming rat was recorded. Lactic acid and SOD level in soleus muscle of each rat was detected. Results: The swimming exhausted time of both moxibustion group and swimming training group were signii cantly increased compared to exhausted control group(P0.05, P0.01). The lactic acid of exhausted control group was signii cantly increased compared to normal control group(P0.01), and the lactic acid of both moxibustion group and swimming training group were signii cantly lower than that of the exhausted control group(P0.01). The SOD level of exhausted control group was signii cantly decreased compared to normal control group(P0.01), and the SOD levels of both moxibustion group and swimming training group were signii cantly higher than that of the exhausted control group(P0.05, P0.01). Conclusion: Like swimming training, moxibustion at Guanyuan(CV-4) can improve the exercise tolerance of rats and decrease the lactic acid accumulation. The physiological mechanism might be related to the SOD level in skeletal muscle.
